Advantages of Conveyor Covers

Conveyor Belt Covers

Protection From Harsh Environmental Conditions: Conveyor belts are subjected to harsh environmental conditions, including exposure to sunlight, wind, and water. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to oxidation of the rubber surface, causing cracks and tears in the belt. Conveyor covers act as protective barriers against these environmental factors, preserving the belt’s integrity and reducing the need for repairs.

Maintaining Productivity And Operational Efficiency: Material run back and spillage can adversely affect productivity targets and operational bottom lines. Conveyor covers prevent material spillage and help in controlling moisture levels, ensuring a consistent and high-quality finished product. In processes heavily reliant on dry conveyed bulk products, conveyor belt covers protect the material from wet weather, preventing screen blinding, clogging, and maintenance issues.

Extended Service Life Of Conveyor Components: Using conveyor covers reduces wear on critical high-performance conveyor components and the belt itself. The protection provided by the covers leads to longer service life for conveyor hardware, resulting in cost savings and increased operational efficiency.

Environmentally Friendly Solution: Dust emissions are a significant concern in bulk handling operations, affecting human health, the environment, and regulatory compliance. Conveyor covers offer an effective and economical solution for dust containment and airborne dust reduction. By minimising dust emissions, the covers protect nearby communities, ecosystems, and workers’ health.

Compliance With Safety Standards: Conveyor covers help bulk handling operators comply with strict safety standards set by regulatory health and safety bodies. By preventing the release of airborne contaminants, such as respirable dust, the covers ensure the well-being of workers and protect operators from non-compliance fines and shutdowns.

Conveyor Cover Materials

Galvanized Steel

Known for its durability and resistance to rust and corrosion, galvanized steel is a popular choice for hood covers in environments prone to moisture and harsh weather conditions. Its longevity and strength make it a cost-effective option for long-term use.

Aluminum

Aluminum stands out for its lightweight nature, making it easy to install and handle. Despite its lightness, it offers excellent durability and resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for various environments, especially those requiring frequent removal or access to the conveyor.

Stainless Steel

For environments where corrosion resistance is paramount, such as in chemical processing plants or areas with high salt exposure, stainless steel is the material of choice. It combines strength with superior corrosion resistance, albeit at a higher cost.

Painted Steel

Painted steel provides an economical option that combines the strength of steel with additional protection from paint coatings. This option allows for customization in terms of colors, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the installation.

Installation Considerations For Conveyor Covers

1. When installed, the open-closed cover is pressed on the two adjacent fixed cover, and its coincidence length is one wave distance or two wave distances. Attention should be paid to placing the hinged side of the open-closed cover on the non-passing side of the conveyor, while the locking side on the passing side of the conveyor.

2. The skeleton of the conveyor cover of fixed conveyor is connected angle steel or Z-shaped steel, whose length is equal to the installation length of the conveyor cover. Weld the connecting angle steel or Z-section steel on the channel steel or small angle steel on both sides of the conveyor frame. If it is necessary to install supporting angle steel, the supporting angle steel is welded on both sides of the frame, and then the connecting angle steel or Z-shaped steel is welded on the supporting angle steel.

3. Install the conveyor cover from one end of the rack to the other end in the shape of "goods". When installing the rain shield, it is strictly forbidden to stand on people. Do not hit or knock hard.

4. Use self-tapping nails to fix the conveyor cover on the connecting angle steel or Z-shaped steel, each piece has not less than four fixed points.

5. Every 10 pieces can also be installed with an observation conveyor cover for easy maintenance and inspection.

6. The folding cover is only used at the folding point of convex arc section of conveyor, while the deviation switch cover is specially designed to cover the deviation switch.

FAQ

Q: What is a conveyor cover?

A: A conveyor cover is an accessory installed over conveyor belts. It serves multiple purposes, including protecting the conveyed material, the conveyor belt itself, and other components like idlers from external elements such as wind, rain, snow, sunlight, and dust. It can also help with material containment, worker safety, and environmental protection.

Q: How do conveyor covers contribute to environmental protection?

A: They prevent the release of dust and other fine particles from the conveyed material into the atmosphere. In industries like cement manufacturing or coal handling, the hood covers trap dust, reducing air pollution. They also protect the conveyed materials from rain and other weather elements, preventing potential contamination of soil and water sources if the materials were to be exposed.

Q: How are conveyor covers installed?

A: The installation process varies depending on the type of cover and the conveyor system. Generally, for fixed - type covers, they are bolted or welded to the conveyor frame. Open - close type covers are often installed using hinges on one side and latches on the other for easy opening and closing.

Q: How do conveyor covers improve worker safety?

A: By enclosing the conveyor system, they prevent workers from accidentally coming into contact with moving parts such as the conveyor belt, pulleys, and idlers. This reduces the risk of injuries like cuts, abrasions, and entanglement. Additionally, they can help in reducing the noise generated by the conveyor operation, which can be harmful to workers' hearing over time.

Q: How do conveyor covers with inspection windows work?

A: These covers have transparent sections made of materials like polycarbonate or tempered glass. Operators can look through these windows to observe the movement of the conveyor belt, the condition of the conveyed material, and the operation of components such as idlers without having to open the cover.

Q: How long do conveyor covers typically last?

A: The lifespan of a conveyor cover depends on several factors, including the material used, the operating environment, and the level of maintenance. Galvanized steel covers in a relatively mild indoor environment may last 10 - 15 years with proper maintenance. In harsh outdoor or corrosive environments, their lifespan may be reduced to 5 - 10 years. Stainless steel covers generally have a longer lifespan, often 15 - 20 years or more, even in challenging environments. Plastic covers may last 5 - 10 years, depending on exposure to sunlight and other factors.
